Di Barnard Interviewed on Radio

I was looking up Bath Christmas Market on the internet prior to visiting with our U3A, I saw there was a Facebook page so went on there & ticked the question ‘who’s going?’.

In a short time I received a message from Radio Bristol asking if I would agree to being interviewed by the morning programme, as they were doing a special programme on the Christmas market & they wanted to speak to people that were coming from various places.

I replied stating I would do it, but questioned if they would want me as I’m an oldie & have a fairly broad Somerset accent!! They came straight back & said I seem just what they want and arranged to telephone me on the Wednesday afternoon.

I went off to coffee morning on the Wednesday feeling quite a celebrity & shared the news with my friends that I was to be on the Radio!

When I got home I was on tenterhooks waiting for the phone to ring when it did I spoke to a very pleasant man who briefly asked various questions & asked me to be ready by the phone at 8.25 the next morning to receive the call to go on air.

Dead on 8.25 the phone rang & when I answered It was explained that the programme would be relayed over the phone to me & I just had to listen & wait until I heard ‘ We now have a lady, Diane Barnard from Burnham on Sea who is going to Bath Christmas Market today on a coach with friends from Highbridge U3A. They asked me how many were going & what we intended to do & if I had been before. I made sure I gave another mention to Highbridge U3A & said what a good Club it is, I made them have a giggle when I said there is a coach load of oldies waiting to descend on Bath with our full purses to live it up!

My husband missed hearing it as I had thought it would also be on Somerset Sound but it wasn’t! We then managed to find Radio Bristol on our TV and we’re pleased to hear it repeated at 9am.

I went off to catch the coach at 9.15 & was pleased to let my friends know of my new found fame.

Ken Burston’s 90th Birthday

On Wednesday 1st July the U3A of Highbridge’s Secretary, Ken Burston, celebrated his 90th Birthday, it was also their weekly Coffee Morning, he received numerous birthday wishes from those members present plus, to his great surprise, a Birthday Cake complete with candles. The cake and gift were presented, as shown, by the U3A’s Chairman Pearl Price assisted by Barbara Croker; this was followed by rendition of the inevitable “Happy Birthday” chorus. Ken wishes to thank all members for their good wishes, the cake and the gift(voucher); he will attempt to thank everyone at the next Coffee Morning.

There was present at the Coffee Morning two guests from the Burnham-on-Sea U3A, their President, Mr Ken Hindle and Treasurer and Concert Party Leader, Joe Tohill.

The U3A of Highbridge’s 15th Anniversary Celebrations

The U3A of Highbridge’s 15th Anniversary Celebrations

Celebrations start on Monday 13th July with the American Picnic at the Lower Maunsel Lock on the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal.

This will follow the usual format, where everyone attending brings along a plate of food to share with others; don’t overdo it because we sometimes find there is a lot of food left over. Bring whatever you fancy, savoury or sweet and of course your cutlery and a glass. Please let Fay know if you plan to come and what food you will bring, to ensure we have variety of food.

The café at the lock has a covered area should we be unlucky and have a cool, damp day. But, just in case it is fine, bring a camp chair or groundsheet. Fingers crossed it will be a nice day!

On the Tuesday 14th July there is an “Away Day” to the Cotswolds; to Moreton in the Marsh and Bourton-on-the Water.

Yes! It is the day before our 15th Birthday Celebration, so please don’t tire yourself out on this trip to the Cotswolds.

On Wednesday 15th July we celebrate this U3A’s 15th Birthday by holding a Special Coffee Morning; it will be somewhat different to that normally enjoyed by regular attendees.

At ‘great expense’ we have arranged for you to be entertained by the Burnham U3A’s Concert Party and Ukulele Band. Also, at further expense, we will provide a Ploughman’s Lunch to all who wish to partake of this gourmet feast; free, gratis and for nothing!

All we would ask you to do — (that is if you wish to attend the Coffee Morning on the 15th July and join in our celebration) —-is to put your name on the list provided so that the caterers will know how many mouths need filling.

At the Coffee Morning on the 1st July, (not a lot of warning really) there will be a list prominently positioned for you to ‘sign’ that is if you want a lunch. Alternatively please ring Vour Orchard on 01278/788984 to ensure you are catered for.

Please help make each day a success!!
